IMPROPER transfer case shifting
#21
I will also agree with other people indicating that the high temps coming off the tranny and exhaust line do make these plastic part more susceptable to breakage by weakening them prematurely. Besides that flaw, the linkage will break as a fail safe device to protect the tranny from rough or improper use.
I rather have a 30 cent part break anyday than having to rebuild my tranny for what ever reason the plastic part broke. It may be inconvient, but my wallet thinks differently...lol
Glad to help. At the end of the day, we are all here to help one another with our Jeep expierence and issues. Thats what makes it a true Jeep thing..lol

Automatice transmission cable
I drove from my house to the Vets, parked the car. When I came back and started the car, the Shifting cable became (broken\disconnected\off track) and I couldn't put my car in gear and had to be towed! I saw this happen in one of "way-of-Lifes's" video where someone with an Auto tranny, the cable came off it's track. I think this is pretty crappy by design. I have never had this happen to any of my cars.... It was a 700.00+ bill to have it repaired. Hope it doesn't happen again or if it does, I hope someone can post some easy instructions on how to install a new cable! My jeep only had 39,000 miles on it and its a 2007.

It sucks to have it break, but it's a 30-cent part. And, like you said, it's a fail safe. If it didn't exist, not telling what the next weaker component would be or how expensive it would to replace... My guess is that it would be a heck of a lot more expensive than 30-cents.

Is the clip something a person could fix if they had a spare, if they were alone when it broke ? Alot of times I'm a few miles away from home and have to use 4 wheel drive alot were we live to check fields.

What takes time and is a PITA (expecially if you're on your back in the mud without using a jack/hoist/chassis stands) is moving the transfer case skid plate out of the way to access the area (unless you have narrow little girl hands, that is). Don't remove all the bolts as the thing is heavy and awkward to try to re-install yourself while lieing on your back in a cramped space; just remove 3 bolts, loosen the 4th, and then just swing the skid out of the way. Shouldn't take more than 5 0r 10 minutes all up.

no unbolting anything just pop a new one on 2 seconds
you can fit a hand up there no problem without removing any skids plate! enough to put a zip tie on it or even replace it its the little white
bushing under the cable for those who dont know what part looks like
Attachment 312252 though i havent had to replace mine yet i
know where it is ( a zip tie would hold it there in a emergency im sure but dont bother putting one there until it happens or carry a new bushing for that . it needs to move freely
i still cant understand why a aluminum bushing wouldnt have acomplished same thing cant see what could get damaged its a bushing for god sakes there made to spin just keep it greesed from what i can see .
