I would guess it was the starter.

Mentioning the cold weather, how cold is it? Some older batteries (don't know if it's true for new ones) need to be warmed up a little before they have enough juice to turn an engine over. I say, turn the lights on for a minute first, to get the battery warmed a little, then try cranking it?

Also, do you have a stick? Maybe the lockout for the clutch depress is faulty?
I tend to agree with you in that I do not think the key is the issue. It seems to me to either be in the starter but more likely is the ignition. Someone suggested that it may be a "glitch" in that the key gets turned too far. I don't know though why it would only be intermittent though. Also, it is an auto and by cold I mean like mid 20's to mid 30's, but I mean more that the Jeep is cold as in it has been sitting for a a day or two.

Spencenaz,

There's a TSB for this. Mine hasn't had this issue since (knock on wood). Too bad they still don't know how to fix a soft top leak.

Dealership said that you don't need to turn the key all the way over to start the Jeep, just turn it to the crank position and let it go, the Jeep will take over from there. So it appears that maybe I was turning the key as far in my JK as what I do my YJ and that is not neccessary. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
