How does emergency brake work?
#11
My e-brake didnt work at all. i had to take it to the dealer to get it readjusted. Now it works fine with minimal effort. If im on a steep inline or decline I still leave it in gear if i get out. but hold pretty good

I agree 100% - my "e-brake" can't hold the JK in place if I use the gas (ask me how I found that out )

my emergency brake consists of jumping a curb or ditching out into the median... and of course keeping my distance from all the crappy drivers out there.

The manual index has it listed s both parking brake and emegency brake. And then when you go to the pg, it talks about a parking brake. It does say you have to pull it up firmly, and yes I do have too. Even when I pull it up very firmly then let my foot off of the brake the jeep will still rock into trans lock. (auto trans) . So i don't know how well this thing really works.

As far as adjustment, my huess it would be under the center console right brfore it exits the vehicle. While I had the console out working on other things, I noticed that there looked to be some adjustment possible. Those with loose parking brakes might want to look into it. You only need to remove the storage part of the console, 6 screws, 2 bolts, pretty simple. Hope this helps.

My emergency brake sucks! If I don't pull it up to the point where I think I might break something, it doesn't hold sh*t.
You should be able to pull it half way up and have it hold the vehicle in place on a slight hill.

If it's still under warranty, and you have a good dealer service dept, I would take it back and have them adjust it. Seems like it should work better.
I haven't seen the Jeep brake shoes, but I just did a brake job on a GM procuct (Trailblazer). The shoe was very small (about 1" wide) , only large enough to expect to be used as a parking brake. Maybe someone can post a pic when doing a brake job.

The JK parking brake is a small drum brake contained within the hat section of the rear brake rotor. It work similar to a regular drum brake, EXCEPT IT DOES NOT SELF ADJUST.
Normal operation should be about 5 clicks to park the Jeep on a steep grade.
If you are getting too much travel at the handle, the dealer can adjust the star wheel within the brake or, if you are mechanically inclined, the plug is near the caliper. It's a snug fit.
If the handle is adjusted correctly, but still not what you think it should be, the park brake shoes can be slightly burnished to increase effectiveness. This happens normally over time, but you can speed it up by driving SLOWLY and slightly applying the park brake, enough so that you can feel the drag. No more than a couple hundred feet should be all you need to get enough heat in the linings.

In my JK Unlim Sahara I was parked on a slight decline right above a huge rock wall. I got out to find the best way out and the e-brake gave out on me and the Jeep started to go down the rocks out of control. My wife and a fellow Jeep-er's daughter was in the truck! I was able to jump in and apply the "real" brake in time but we bottomed out a bit and messed up a skid plate pretty bad.
So DO NOT rely on the emergency brake!
I have a question though. Is there a way to tighten the brake to avoid this happening again and to make it a bit easier to apply the brake to full compression?
