Many of us install aux coolers. Its not a big deal. I bought one at advance auto for 60 bucks and shocked the salesman as he watched me install it in about 10 minutes. Most of that time was spent taking off my grill. Its the best mod i have ever done to my jeep and i just followed the directions here in the forums.

Anyone have a trans cooler writeup link? I can't find it on my phone since I am traveling at the moment. Thanks

I wish I had read a bit more about the autos before I bought my JK, which replaced a 2011 Mustang GT with massive transmission problems that Ford didn't want to fix. Now I'm in the same boat? Awesome.

I just hope it doesn't happen to me before I talk my wife into letting me trade up to a 12 JKU Rubi.

I sure hope that the 2012's won't have this problem.

Come to Texas. Only one person has to give permission and that can be YOU as the caller.

An inexperienced question on my part, but is this specific problem related just to the 3.8L and it's 4 speed automatic transmission only?

Bigger tranny coolers are a just band-aid to another problem.

Yes, I know. There's actually a published heat temp range that shows life expectancy of an automatic transmission if you reach those temps. GM and Ford went to larger capacity oil pans plus improved tranny coolers (stacked plate, not rib and fin) years ago to more than double the life of their transmissions. I battled the temp problems with an AOD trans with a small torque convertor in a supercharged 5.0L Mustang.

So I was just curious if anyone knew if the new 5 speed overdrive is Jeep's "answer" to the old 4 speed automatic problem since I know nothing of the Jeep's internals on their transmissions.

First off the stock trans cooler in the jeep is nothing more than a big U turned sideways and its built into the verry bottom of the radiator it simply goes in across the rad and back out this has been the standered trans cooler set up in 90% of american cars since the 60s. I think the problem with the jeep is the fact that they have the ac condenser in front of the rad and its blocking the airflow along with a tranny that makes lots of heat when worked hard and .I put an after market B&M coller in mine the first month I had it and I have never seen the hot oil light cost me $60 and a hour of time and there is no way that itll void your warranty. They will tell you that and charge you out the wazu to do it for you but it wont void your warranty ! ! ! You guys that have the new 12s I think what your looking at is the ac condenser follow the trans cooling lines and I think youll see they go into the rad on the drivers side at the bottom and if im wrong lets see some pictures cause that means they finaly did something about the problem they dont have.

The transmission cooler on the JK's is part of the AC Condenser. In my opinion this is the reason for the overheating trans fluid. My 98 TJ with the 42RLE transmission never had a trans overheat problem. The trans cooler is in the radiator.
I have a 09 JKU Rubicon. The first mod I did was to install a Derale heat sink trans cooler. It's mounted on the rail in front of the Condenser/Radiator. It does not block the Condenser/Radiator like the B&M coolers do. It is 17' long, holds about 30 oz of fluid. It's plumbed inline with the trans fluid return line to the transmission. The average pan temp is 178 degs; however on a long run in AZ temps of 110 degs, it went up to 200 degs.
