Default Hood Latch Broken!

Well it finally happened, my driver's side hood latch broke. Doing 70mph down the highway, a large semi passes oncomming, and SNAP!!! I'm skillfully watching the top of the latch fly over my head while concurrently wetting myself because the hood came up around 6". I could hear the safety catch doing it's job but it almost looked like the hood was bending in the oncomming gusts. I have to admit that the dealership was great and even offered to take a latch off of a Jeep in stock (as no replacement part could be had for at least 2 days). The service manager brought up a good point, if this is happening now and it's still relatively warm out, what will happen when the temp really drops?
These things are gonna be breaking all the time! Am I the first one to have one of these break?

Was it the rubber portion that broke or the plastic part of the latch?

Not my style either, but I just saw it and thought of your recent break.

I still dont believe that the hood latches are what needs to be fixed.........its the fact that the hood wont stay put and puts too much force on the rubber in the latches. But I have thought about using some pin style hood latches.

This is scary. I don't know if you're the first, but have you considered turning in a report to NHTSA? If enough folks have a problem, they can force a mfg recall.

Here's the link.

It might be most helpful if you could recover the part that flew off.
