Default Heat shield?

So my Jeep starting making this loud annoying rattling noise and my Dad realized that it was the heat shield in between the gas tank and the muffler. I brought it to a shop to see if they could just bolt it back on quick. They said that it's not held on by bolts, and there isn't really a way to put it back on They told me to just take the whole thing out. Is this something I should do? I'm worried that something could catch on fire if I take it out. It must be there for a reason right? There's not anyway to just secure it again?

I re-secured mine with some large fender washers and push-on nuts, both obtained from an auto body paint store. In my case, the OEM nuts and washers wore through the shield, letting the shield drop off the hangers.

Take a look at yours and see if my fix will apply to yours.

That's a common issue in the rear and Ron's fix is exactly what I used on my 2003. You will not catch anything on fire but you would experience more heat in the rear cargo area. Securing back as it was intended to be used is your best choice.

Same as the above. Use some large washers to re-secure it. I's there for a reason and it's generally not recommended to just bin it.

Default UPDATE...the dealership LIED

So I brought my Jeep to an actual Jeep dealership yesterday because I finally decided to get the side view mirror recall fixed. While I was there, I had them fix my heat shield issue. They informed me that they tightened it up and it was all good. I decide to check it out today in the daylight and it's GONE! They just took it out! They even wrote on the paper that they secured it. When I told the guy about it in the beginning I said that I didn't want to rip it out since I'm sure it's there for a reason and he agreed! What should I do now? Go bitch them out and have them put in a new one? Or just leave it out, wait for it to catch on fire and then sue the sh*t out of them? I'm pissed that they lied to me. I may be a girl but I'm not stupid. They should have just been honest

Yep, pretty classic "stealership" move. Personally I hate dealers so I would go back and get your money back! Not only did they lie but they did exactly what you said you didn't want.

Take it back and have them replace it. You've got pictures and the statement shows it was tightened. Ask how it was tightened to the point where it magiced itself off of the vehicle in the service bay.

Thanks guys I think I will go back and at least get my money back. This is actually the first time I've ever brought my Jeep to a dealership. I bought it from a Volkswagen dealership and always get it fixed at Firestone because I know the guys there and they barely charge me anything to have work done. There's also a mechanic I go to that specializes in Jeeps but they have stupid hours. I only went to the "stealership" because of the recall. Never again!
