The future demise of Jeep and it's Wrangler

If the next jeep goes unit body from body on frame to cut 1,000 lbs, then this is how the frame will look. It keeps removable doors and no top. Stay with body on frame and expect to pay much more for all the aluminum to remove weight. Will you pay $35,000 for a base rig?
Or jeep can keep body on frame, stay with steel for cost saving and just reduce size to bring the weight down to 3,000 lbs. Just how large will this 'new-old-school' jeep be? About the size of a Mini Cooper.

Even if this were a current concept-car, remember that they are never seriously considered as representative of what the new models will actually be. They are intended more as a platform to introduce some new design concepts for less radical changes (like headlights or some new technology offering). I'm not going to panic until I see a new model release statement.
God, I hope it doesn't look like a European SUV - it would take all the heritage out of it.

Giving that this was a '97 concept, to me it looks more like the early Liberty.
You can't get all worked up about Concept cars. What bothers me is that the costs for all these crazy ideas gets passed on through the sticker prices on all the real vehicles!

The future isn't what it used to be!
In the March 2014 Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road (yes, I get early releases) there is a blurb in the "Old Guys Rule" This Just In section that a reporter with Automotive News interviewed Mike Manley, head of Jeep. Manley says that the "next generation" Jeep Wrangler (Still a Wrangler but not a JK?) will have IFS to reduce weight. Release of the "new" Wrangler is scheduled for 2016.
I just hope they go with a De Dion design. It seems like a good compromise between the extremes of solid live axle and MacPherson struts.
Actually, I may be able to live with this:

It's like a land rover wanna be front end and tye rest looks like a normal jk. Lol. You know I like change. This don't look bad and if it still performs then why not. For some reason people are scared of change. There is always going to be a new design change at some point or another in the line. There always has been and that will never change. Sales aren't going to decline. They are in market to make money. They coming to the engineering table and say "hey how are we going to design this for the rock crawlers". They care about hitting the entire target audience, not a small fraction of it that makes up a very small portion of their revenue and sales.

The future IS the past!
When is a Jeep not a Jeep? When it's a Ford!
The last "jeep" produced to see military action was the Ford M151 MUTT. And, guess what... It had a uni-body design with independent suspension!
Now if there was some way Ford could buy Jeep from Fiat and make them an American company again.
Of course we would have to get used to seeing those horizontal grill slats.
