Default Fobless Keys?

Do these Jeep Keys have a security chip like say a Ford does? I'de like to get a key cut for my keeping in my wallet. I had to leave my Jeep at my house 70 miles away this weekend because I had forgotten both keys at my Girlfriend's house and had to drive my company car all weekend. I'd like to keep a spare in my wallet. The info may be in the owners manual, but it's in my Jeep back at the house.
Thanks

Yes - They have a security chip. The instructions on programming a new key are in the users manual and you can get the keys online at flea-bay if you want, but they are not small enough to keep in your wallet. I have four keys for mine which leaves me one, my wife one, a spare at the house, and a second spare locked up tight. If you don't have two keys, you have to get the dealer to program the second, and it can cost around $100. I had to do this when I got my previous KJ, so I learned my lesson.

x2 on the post above. I used to work around a metal detector/scanner, and under the buttons there's a chipset.

Cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply. If that is the case, then if I can find a plain steel blank, I could get it cut for just unlocking the door, and still keep it in my wallet. Then I could hide a spare fobbed key under the dash. Any one know if a steel blank is available?

Default spare key

Muddogg, I went to the local hardware store and they made me a key for my wallet. It will only unlock the door (the alarm will sound when the door is opened) but it works great when you lock the keys in the jeep.

x2, had one whipped up for opening the tailgate in the winter when I DEFINITELY don't want to turn the vehicle off. Cost me nothing. Had a buddy do it.

I got a key gut today, they have a new type of key cutter at Home Depot by the way, hard to miscut a key with this version. I figured out that if you lock the Jeep with the Fob it sets the alarm, if you lock the doors with the door panel door lock button, it does not set the alarm. half the time I lock it with the door button anyway. If the alarm gets set off, if you havr the Fob. you can hit the unlock button to shut it off. I guess I need to hide a Fobbed key within a second or twos reach from the door.

Thanks all for the tip. I have a habit of leaving my keys in & leaving it unlocked, then getting something out & locking it... A steel key would do the trick for getting me back in.

dunno what to tell you hard top folks out there, but it's kinda hard to be stranded with ur keys locked inside when u have a soft top. i think i'm going to get a spare key tho while i still have two so i can program it myself. then i want a steel one to keep up front so i can unlock my console when i realize my EZpass is locked in there as i'm driving down the road
