I gave up, too, when I tried this a couple years ago. Since then, the following video has been made available. Check it out before you go at it again:

I'm curious when was the last year the windshield was easily lowered and didn't look odd being down? Is the JK the first model where it's clear Jeep decided that the ease of lowering the windshield didn't matter? Was it easy on a TJ?

I don't think the windsheild is designed in a way that would make it worth putting down for any reason. It has that curved frame that looks odd when it's down.

ive taken down 2 windshields it takes forever and because of the curvature of the windshield you see less around the hood. if i ever do it again its 4 more torx bolts and the windshield comes completely off

Yes, the TJ windshield was MUCH easier to fold down (half the hardware and half the time) and it looked much better when it was folded down too.

I don't think I'll ever bother folding the windshield on the JK down

IIRC, the manual suggests driving only off-road and not over something like 5-10 mph with the windshield down.

anyone drive windshield up --> but without putting those two side-bars back on?

(obviously it would give you less structural protection in case of a roll over)
(but it looks cool with the bars off)

I haven't tried it. Thoughts?

I rode that way on my TJ once... only for the reason that I needed it back up and the rest of the hardware wasn't with me. You do get the funny feeling that you'd be crushed in the event of a flip.

x2 on the TJ windshield being way easier to fold. Also, curved windshield or flat windshield... they ALL look funny/wierd when folded down! But its a jeep thing, and its cool either way.

Ive heard that once you fold the w/s once, it messes up some seal that will leak air and whistle from then on...

Any truth to this?
