Differential Fluids

Like I said in another thread, my dealer up here in Canada wanted $300 for their "4x4 service" which I assume is just changing the diff fluids. I am going to call later and ask what all is included in this "4x4 service" and if it is just the fluid change I am going to write to Chrysler Canada with a complaint. They charge $40 for their oil change service, and that is 5 litres of oil and a filter - how in the hell can each diff cost $150 to service?

I'll bet that they haven't updated the "job time" for the change to a drain plug from the old method of removing the cover. $200 is still a rip-off though even if they did have to remove and reseal the cover. Valvoline Instant Oil Change charged $30 last time I checked.

schedule
I only drive my TJ off road; and to / from said off road, and some times to work and etc...
anyway, its only 3500 - 4500 / year
so I change ALL my fluids 1x / year
Transmission
Oil
Diff fluid
Coolant
I also tore off my brakes a few weeks ago 'wheeling and replaced all the brake fluid with synthetic...
since I only change fluids 1x / year I always spend the $ for synthetic...

Well I bought a siphon/pump for $22 that I can use every time I change the diff fluid.
I bought the Canadian Tire Motomaster 80w-90 gear oil for $15 for 4L which should be enough to do both the front and rear. I am not going to bother with synthetics right at the moment. I never go offroad and the towing I do is so minimal that it shouldn't matter.
A far cry from $300 eh?

Don't forget that the transfer case fluid doesn't have to be REPLACED until 97,000km. They just mention topping it up at each diff fluid change.

I hear ya nextreme, but I think I want to switch out to synthetics much before that. Knowing that I'm running syn fluids has always made me feel better

I'd bet money they're just using their little book and looking up differential service which probably includes removing the cover, scraping the sealant, and reseating. Still a rip-off but a little more understandable then just refilling.
Either way this is something I choose to do by myself too.
