Take him for a ride on a 50 mile loop trail (but only half way.)

Could I even do that? I would think insurance would want a repair shop to fix the dent instead of actually replacing it.. let alone cut me a check for what the hood is worth

the ins company will cut you a check assuming that you will fix or replace the hood, fix or replace is their call. however your rates will go up and in the long run that free hood will become very expensive.

If your so called "Friend "won't pay for it. Tell your insurance company, file a police report for destruction of private property and let the insurance company go after him. Me, I'd just beat the shit outta him with his own car.

Normally a large surface area like a hood with a heat source underneath is not a good canidate for any type of repair, unless it is small, or on the edge of the panel. A large basketball-sized dent is accompanied by a large amount of "stretch" at the edges of the dent, and this stretch of the metal will not "pop out" smoothly when trying to board it out. If you are particular or are looking for long-term repair holdup, then replace the hood....

the insurance company cant make you go to any specified body shop.
Have the insurance adjuster come out and inspect the damage, and give you a quote.
See if the amount will let you do what you want.
If so, accept it.
you can repair your vehicle anywhere you want.....by law.
You almost always come out on top if you have them cut the check directly to you.
It isnt fraud unless you try to claim the same damage down the road.

my rates went up $50/yr, and they cut me a check for 1600 after my deductible for my hood and one slightly blemished fender. I didnt think the fender was that bad, hood cost me 1.5k painted, and I had money left over.

It will take 32 years before it starts "costing me in the long run".
