Default compatibility of soft tops from 08 to '12

I have a 2012 unlimited rubicon with the hard top only.. Since I am in Bama, there are some nice days every once in a while where having a soft top would be nice to have for ease of lowering / raising in case of sudden changes in the weather...

my sister has an 08 unlimited sahara that came with the soft top..... she has a hard top on it as well and the soft top is just sitting in my parents barn...

my question is this, is the 08 top compatible with my '12? I know i need all of the brackets and such...

I figured even if the top material was worn through in a couple places, as long as the frame is ok I can replace the fabric for much much less than a full soft top.

anything else I need?

thanks for your help

It will work. Just make sure you use the matching 2008 Door Surrounds. The door Surrounds changed in 2010 when the cable top was introduced.

Would the opposite work as well? As in the '12 top work with a 09 jk?

any complete soft top will fit on any JK.

But you have to have the door surrounds that match and the rear window that matches.

In other words, a complete soft top set up for any particular year will go onto any other year JK.

Just can't necessarily mix and match door surrounds or rear windows.

The tops are one or the other. The newer, cable-style came out on the '10 models.

If you get an '08 top, it won't be cable-style. You'll need the '07-'09 door surrounds for it.

Yes, but im trying to basicly see what people think who know both styles. Is it a big difference in function and durability? Is it gonna be a decision i wish i didnt make picking the old style?
