Default Can I shift xfer case out of Neutral when stopped?

Shifting between 4L and 4H should be done at 2-3 mph, but what happens if you happen to stop the vehicle with the transfer case selector in neutral, between 4H/4L?

Happened to me today, on a level surface, w/6-speed, and it was VERY hard to get the selector back into either 4H or 4L, didn't want to force it so I had to push the Jeep, jump back in and shift. Worked fine but kind of a pain. Should I just be able to force the selector back into 4L/4H with the Jeep stopped?

With the clutch in you should be able to get to 4H. If it is harder than you are comfortable with rather than move the vehicle or output of the transmission, move the engine or the input side.

Step on the clutch. Go to 1st gear. Let off the clutch so engine and transmission will spin up. Step on the clutch again and as it disengages the transmission will spin down. Put pressure on the transfer case shifter and when the gears line up it should drop right into 4H. Or 4L if that is what you need.

Makes sense, thanks... I'll remember that for next time.

Not telling you how to live your life but...

Experiment with it in the driveway first. When you ever need it off the beaten path you will be proficient and it will be second nature. Just an idea. It stems from that military "Train like you fight" mentality that was drilled into my head repeatedly.

Over.

Yep, and a good one. In fact that's what I was doing -- though it was in a flat, empty parking lot.

Although I have an auto trans. If you shut off the engine put it in 4lo and restart it seems to work fine. At least it did for me when I lost momentum.

But the issue is that it wouldn't drop right into 4Lo or 4Hi. There are threads all over the forum of people breaking the shift linkage. While stopped with the transfer case in neutral if the gears aren't lined up you have to either force them into alignment/mesh or move them. He moved the vehicle, driveshaft and output of the transfer case. The above post is how to "move" the engine or input side.

In an auto you have to do the same thing. Transfer case in Neutral with the vehicle stopped. Put the transmission in gear. It will freely spin the transfer case. Shift the transmission to Neutral and apply pressure to the transfer case. When the gears line up they will mesh into 4Hi or 4Lo...hopefully with minimal grinding.
