I changed mine at 15,000 miles. The front was honey-like. The rear was darker, but hardly tar-like or black. Good luck figuring out what's wrong. Hope it's not too serious.

What was the reason for pulling the cover? New gears? Checking out a noise? Just an xxx mile inspection?

They were doing the 30k service.

I would pull the cover and check everything! Black and low miles don't sound right! I allways pull my covers first time. and then add the best AMSOIL! then do the normal fuild chang when needed.

1) What would be causing this? Shop told me could have just been super dirty, or have a bearing going bad.

2) Should I worry much about it? Shop told me it will be fine until next oil change and have it looked at then!

The shop changed the oil for free, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Just checked out the link, thanks for the additional info.

Shop said they cleaned everything with the cover off, but since it is just words spoken by a dealership, I will take it at face value. Hopefully all will be well at the next oil change for the Jeep, they will check the diff again.

Could it be the actual oil they used?

I seem to recall a thread a while back indicating that dealerships (or a specific dealership, at least) used big barrels of lower quality oil. As opposed to the higher quality stuff most of us grab off the shelf...
