Question Best Jk Unlimited for mileage?

Hey Guys, I figure this has been talked abut time and time again, but what GEAR setup from the factory gives the best mileage? Is it the 3.21, 3.73, or the 4.10 on the rubi? Has anyone seen any real differance between the three? At this point, I am looking at the sahara with the trailer tow package, and I really dont plan on moding too much, I have my TJ for that. But, if there wasnt that much of a differance I may consider stepping up to the rubicon.
Thank you so much for your help!

Theoretically the 3.21 should yield the best MPG, but there are other factors as to how you drive and what you intend to do. If the 3.21 gearing isn't enough for you and you're revving to 4K everytime to shift then you'll likely eat up any benefit from it. Personally I am glad I got the 4.10s. It is adequate from a performance standpoint, and just by keeping the revs down and driving sensibly I can eclipse 20MPG overall on a regular basis.

Interesting, thank you! what about in the middle, the 3.73 gears offered with the tow package? Also, I see you play drums, does the 2 door have enough room? Im a drummer also, and that is one thing that I hate about the tj, I barely have any room to carry my drums to and from shows. Also, pearl drums are the only way to go.

I think most people are content with the 3.73 in stock form, it may be a good compromise. Personally I think the 4.10 is better, but it is ultimately subjective.

As for the 2 door, it is plenty big. I don't have a monstrous kit, but I actually fit everything I gigged with in my TJ, obviously the JK is even better accomodating. A four-door JK would probably fit any kit within reason.

As for Pearl drums, I've owned three different Masters kits and all have been great. Currently I'm down to just one, a BRX (birch) Masters kit in Antique Gold finish. THey are great looking and sounding. Some of the stuff Pearl is making now though is just amazing, down the road I hope to buy a killer "no compromises" kit.

Good luck with the JK search!

I had a TJ with a 4 cylinder and the only time I used 6th was going downhill with a tail wind. Have an 07 Unlimited with a tow pkg and I "think" it has a 4:10. After 7500 miles, my best MPG to date is 18. All highway, little wind, at 60-65 MPH. Don't like the mileage, LOVE the Jeep.

I have a boner stock sahara, 6 spd, hardtop, with the tow pkg, so I have 3.73 gears, I dont drive like a crazy lunatic, shift under 2800 rpm and 99% of the time its just me in the car, and I only weigh 160lbs, and I dont haul big heavy gear around.....and I have gotten 270 miles to a tank since the day I got it, I have 1500 miles on the truck so far, and there are droves of you guys braggin about your 19, 20, 23 mpg you get all day long while going up hill, with 5 fat adults packed in the car, with 300lbs winches and big bumpers, and 38 inch tires and 12 inch lift etc. Only time I got a higher mpg reading from the computer was when I was on the highway, doing under 70 in 6th with the cruise on, and even then I was about 20 mpg. Once I got back home, and drove more around town, my reading is back to @16, but I bet if I hand calc, it will be under 15 mpg. Sorry to change subject, and I dunno, this whole mileage thing just bugs me.

The reason I got the 3.73 was because the 3.21 gears were SOOOOOOO slow in this thing. I test drove one, and this is the way it went....4th gear got you up to highway speed, 5th held you there, and 6th started slowing you back down.
There are a lot of variables to pulling it off, it doesn't happen for me every tank, but I can do it regularly. Most of the winter I got in the 18.5 range, last summer it was often over 20mpg, my last tank was 19.5mpg. Probably 75% of my driving is highway, and if you keep your foot out of the throttle and don't speed (meaning 60MPH for me) it makes a huge difference. I'd be curious as to what kind of fuel mix you get there in NJ to, knowing that it is under the smog microscope. I also see you only have 1500 miles on the Jeep, you may well see a noticeable improvement after about twice that, I did. I also drive for effieciency, meaning anticipating traffic lights, gradual acceleration, etc.

I have an 08 Unlimited X with automatic. I average 20 mpg but I have to work at it. I do a lot of highway driving which makes it easier to hit up to 22 mpg on the computer. I learned with one of my earlier cars that you can improve your mileage if you watch the computer and experiment with the accelerator. Back off when up to speed and on a decline. Back off as soon as you see a light turn amber. Try to keep it between 60-65 mph. Lower is even easier. We have E-10 fuel here in jersey. I hit 22.1 mpg on this tank right after fill up and out onto the highway. I am currently at 20 mpg because of stop start in town. It is possible.

Yes, this mileage topic really bugs me. Finally, got over 21mpg!! Filled up in Scottsdale, got on freeway, kept at 65mph with criuse, no wind (watched the flags) gassed up in Quatzite.
150.8 miles, 7.01 gallons = 21.5 mpg!! Of course, there are variables. The rest of the way home, 70-75 mph, major winds in Palm Springs} 211.6 miles, 12.3 gallons = 17.2 mpg. which is normal for me. Rubicon with 33's and 5.13's. Runs 2500 rpm at 65 mph. Around town I get between 15.5 to 16.5.

Just make sure you calculate it yourself. Don't rely on your computers. It lies to make you feel better.
Highway I can get 20-21 through the Appalachian mountains. 17-18 with town driving. I have an '07 Sahara with 4.10s. All stock.
