Hmm 9/10? Sounds iffy

I run Royal Purple Synthetic in my '12, oil change "interval" is 12k kms with conventional oil so I don't mind the price difference, plus it helps for the extreme cold weather we get up here. Regular Mopar filter until something better is made.

What he is talking about is over time if the filter drains back, once the vehicle is started the filter must fill up before it passes oil to the engine. since it is an oversize filter it would take longer to fill.

First oil change was at 500 miles. I've only used Mobil 1 fully synthetic high performance 5W-30 engine oil ($10 / quart) with whatever the $8 filter is.

Then I run Mobil 1 synthetic gear lubricant LS 75W-140 with Trans-X posi-trac limited slip gear additive in the diffs.

I'm curious as to the advantages of running a larger filter like this? Are the filters less expensive because they're intended for a more common motor or vehicle?

Default Thanks for the Advice

Thanks for the input. I might be searching the forum incorrectly, I did look to see if there were any other threads for this topic and didn't see any. I will check again. Thanks for your patience with newbies.

A larger filter area to provide a bit better cleaning of the oil. Retail cost is the same. I suspect Jeep pays a few pennies less for the smaller filter, which is why they choose it.

Thank you. I've never given it much thought beyond, "the book says I need that filter."

That is why I use the Napa Gold (Wix) filters. Some brands have a reputation for causing dry starts because their drain back valves are substandard, regardless of filter size. Anyone interested in this can search "dry starts" on the forum to see the arguments ... I mean discussions ... on this topic.

I can't recall a single instance of an in spec oil being the cause of any problem in a JK on this or the other forums I belong to or lurk in. Over 5 years, not one.

(Consuming oil isn't the oil's fault)

Way to take it so literally. 10/10. Better?
