Pros: It keeps the caps from flying off.
Conn: it is a PITA to fix on the trails unless you have a grinder or a complete new assembly.

I thought about this, but every time I've lost an axle on the trail, it's been *because* of the u-joint cap, so it seems like a worthwhile tradeoff. I carry spares anyway, so I can pull the whole thing and just replace it on the trail, then when I get back home, I can grind off the tack and replace the joint to use as a spare next time around.

True, it's an easy fix at home with the right tools but it can be a pain on the trail. I agree that you could use a once broken axle a spare once you take it home a grind off the tack. I just wouldn't recommend it unless you carry a spare shaft while you’re on the trails.

are both front axles interchangeable?

Also, where's the best place to read about how to learn how to make this repair? Is there a Chiltons yet for JK's? I'll start looking.

I have never tried to remove a welded cap on the trail, but I think you might be able to get through the tacks with a good cold chisel and hammer.

I know this is an old thread but should the rear axle shaft caps be welded too or just the front?
