I had something similar on my loaded X happen in NYC backing up a steep ramp in an underground parking garage. It shook a bit and reved like it was out of gear, barely moved. A few folks here and on the other forum told me this is part of the traction control system, it's normal? Weird.

i have a manual so no experience with this, but it sounds something like the way the traction control system acts when it kicks in....you might try turning off the ESP when reversing and see if it still does it....
