THAT's the custom paint job?

 

If I paint the muffler and one day my muffler decides to rust, is having it painted going to stir up some warranty issues?

Yep - Went to the local auto store - got some ultra high temp ceramic paint - and painted that sucker - looks great - had on for over a month now - still looks good - touch ups will be a snap...

I scanned through this thread and noticed someone said the muffler was made from poorly galvanized steel. So, I thought I would post this from another thread:

The muffler is stainless steel. 409 stainless, not the real good 304 stainless that will look new for the life of the vehicle.
409 stainless is cheaper and is widely used by the auto makers. It won't rust out fast like regular steel. It is, however, prone to surface rust. I have read that the surface rust is a "protective" layer. Some people have painted theirs with paint that does not require surface rust removal.

Corrosion Resistance
Grade 409 resists atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust will form in most atmospheres; this rust retards further corrosion but makes the surface undesirable for decorative applications. The corrosion resistance is about the same as that of 3CR12 and the 12% chromium martensitic grades such as 410, and inferior to the 17% chromium grade 430.

I did mine in flat black and it looks awesome. I would do it again in a heart beat.

 

I went to Advance Auto today to pick up 4 quarts of Mobil 1 diff oil to do my post gear 500 mile fluid change and also picked up a can of Krylon BBQ paint (thought it was funny they would have that at and auto parts store, but then again that is what I was using for). While the front diff was draining, I pulled off the muffler. The rubber hangers were a pain, but some dish soap and a few screw drivers to pry them off, it wasn't too bad. Sanded with 220 grit, brake cleaned off, and painted with 3 coats of the paint. It is a semi gloss, but looks more flat than gloss. Just the look I was hoping for. In between coats of paint, I did the rear diff. After an hour of drying, I had it back on the Jeep in about 5 minutes.

I painted the entire muffler and exhaust tip (shot some inside the tail pipe as well). I looks awesme - everyone should do this. I will post a pick of mine soon.
