Anyone paint their muffler?

I replaced the stock muffler and replaced it with a Flowmaster Delta 50, staying in the stock location. The muffler is barley visible there now, but the muffler shop guy sprayed the muffler and tail pipe black. It is his "trademark" thing. It looks good (what you can see of it.)

I would definately sand it before painting it if you have a little surface rust on it. After a long Michigan winter I had a little surface rust on the muffler. I sanded it, pressure washed it, sanded it again and wiped it down with a wet rag. I let it dry for a day and then painted it.
I also used newspaper around it to prevent overspray. It worked just fine.
