Anyone else's A/C run in defrost?

Really it comes about from companies trying figure out how to make the A/C system last longer. Lots of people wouldn't use the compressor during the winter, and combined with the lackluster lines in the 60s many people had their systems rot out. So to make sure that the compressor cycles in the winter, they made it work with the defroster. It does marginally help with defogging as well, but that wasn't why they did it.
All cars do this now, and have for at least 10 years. The only cars I've ever had that didn't were my 1968 Impala and my 1997 TJ, but it didn't have A/C, so that one wasn't hard to figure out.

Read the manual!
Thsi is from the manual page 241.
NOTE: The air conditioning compressor operates in
both Mix and Defrost or a blend of these modes even if
the fan switch is not in the A/C position. This dehumidifies
the air to help dry the windshield. To improve fuel
economy, use these modes only when necessary.
