Default Anyone else's A/C run in defrost?

is this "normal" A/C clucth engages when set to defrost or defrost/feet even when the A/C button is off.
Go outside, start jeep, open hood and look at the A/C clutch. Now set the controls to defrost and turn the fan control on and see if yours does it as well.

It is normal. The attempt is to cut down the humidity to help windows defog faster. The vehicle will do it even if the ac button is not pushed.

Be glad that it does this, as most cars do also. If it didn't they would be nearly impossible to defrost. Ever drive a CJ or YJ in the rain?

Really it comes about from companies trying figure out how to make the A/C system last longer. Lots of people wouldn't use the compressor during the winter, and combined with the lackluster lines in the 60s many people had their systems rot out. So to make sure that the compressor cycles in the winter, they made it work with the defroster. It does marginally help with defogging as well, but that wasn't why they did it.
All cars do this now, and have for at least 10 years. The only cars I've ever had that didn't were my 1968 Impala and my 1997 TJ, but it didn't have A/C, so that one wasn't hard to figure out.

It's a govt. conspiracy to force automobile owners to consume more fuel to make more capital from fuel taxes.

What he said. Air conditioning is not just removing heat from the air, it's removing humidity as well.
