I am feeling lucky. My '07 is approaching 100k miles, and it's one of the best-running, best-starting vehicles I've owned. No piston slap (like GM trucks), no ticks, and no lifter noise. My plugs came out at 89K looking better than any I've seen - no deposits, cardboard brown, and all uniform.

I use about a quart of oil every 2,500 miles. I run conventional oil at factory weight and change it every 4000-5000 miles.

I tried synthetic one change; had a bad ADB valve and I burned more oil.. Experimented with 5w30, and I could notice the extra load on the motor. Haven't gone back to either.

Anyway. Is there any info I could give you guys that may help track down issues? Build dates or anything like that?

I see you change oil at 4000-5000 miles. I change oil at 3000 miles. Am I wasting my time and money? I just had rings replaced and have 23 miles on them.

Cheap oil is OK when changed often.
Expensive oil Is OK to change less often.
It evens out.

I prefer better oil, and change it twice a year; usually ends up being about every 6,000 miles.

Brother-in-laws 07 sahara just seized at 80,000 miles on Friday.
The thing was never off road and never driven hard.

What's the ring job costing everyone? I know a spun bearing is in my future. I would much rather keep the cost down and not blow motor.

I hate to dodge an answer, but I would say it's a personal preference thing. It certainly won't hurt to change every 3K, that's obvious... but I'm not sure everyone has the conviction they could go 4K, 5K or longer.

I personally think 4K is pretty reasonable for conventional. 5K may be ok if you are in a warm climate or during the summer months. Winters are harsh on motor oils, so I change around the 4k mark.

I have to wonder what a dedicated motor or speed shop would charge. I would think it would be cheaper than the dealer price. Plus, they may be able to squeak some more ponies out of the little tiller..

Honestly, the 3.8 is way too overworked in the JK. Running any motor under that kind of constant load will destroy it. The JK needs V8
