A quart per 3000 miles seems to be a very low bar, tolerated for engines built in the 60s or earlier.. Is this really considered normal?

No, not normal by any means but Chrysler claims it's within "acceptable limits" and won't take any action on motors that burn this amount or less. I've had 25yr-old cars with 200K miles on them with worn rings & valve stem seals that billowed blue smoke out the back & they didn't even use a quart per 1K miles.

I hear people are now having trouble with 08 and 09 model years. Seems to be a flaw with the 3.8 design and poor quality control at factory. The later years are just now getting to the mileage point where the 07s started experiencing issues. My rig is an 09 and I just started noticing a slight ticking noise low in the motor. Currently losing about a half quart every 1000 miles. Have 26k on the OD. Had no oil loss before the noise. Luckily I have the lifetime warranty, but if the engine goes, not sure i want another 3.8. Thinking about taking the cash and swapping out to a diesel 4bt. Some guys on the fabrication. Thread mentioned that there is a place in Florida starting to do this. Supposedly should be cheaper than a hemi swap even with a trans change as well... We shall see.

ok. So after speaking to Chrysler and the dealership, I got some pretty good news. Chrysler will pay for just over half of a new engine! I am realy pleased with that seeing I didn't have any warranty left. It will come to $2300 out the door. Better than I expected. It will also have a 5 year, 100000 mile warranty!

Just did the second oil change by myself on my 2011. After 4000 miles on the oil it's down 2 quarts. Filled her with 6 quarts of synthetic. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Just completed my oil consumption test last week. After the dealer checked the oil four times the Jeep is using a quart of oil every 700 miles. It's under warrenty, now the dealer needs the ok to replace the piston rings. Dealer told me other manufactures are having the same problem because the rings are made thinner to increase the GPM.
