I have convinced my service dept. to replace both shafts as discussed previously. They are going to do the work this Wednesday. I will let you know how it goes.

This was one of those things where I had to be persistant and let them know what we all thought it was. So keep at it.

I have similar knock in the steering only after driving for 30-45 minutes -- quicker if it is warm outside.

After reading this forum, I checked the steering column. The first thing I noticed is how hot the column getts being close to the exhaust manifold -- so hot you could barely touch it. After letting it cool down, I moved the column in an up and down motion and you could definitelt see hear and feel the knock.

I hope DC has a redesigned coulmn that has different tolerances or is more resistant to heat otherwise a replacement will have the same problem in a few months.

That's exactly how mine was. They must of had a fix because since mine has been replaced I've had no issues.

So I guess this is kinda a known problem with CJ's, YJ's, TJ's, and now JK's, especially ones that have been lifted and fitted with large tires.

There's a company called Borgeson (www.borgeson.com) that makes replacement Heavy Duty Shafts for all of the Jeeps except ours. I contacted them and they replied saying that if they get enough requests they will produce them.

Check the link out. They produce the exact shafts that Scootr68 had replaced, but again, not for the JK.......yet?

Recap -

two appointments with service department.
Second appointment convinced them to replace both intermediate shafts on the steering shaft.
Few days now (hot days) and lots of driving.....

No problems.

I will keep you posted to see if this returns.

I'm sending my shaft to Borgeson on Monday. Hopefully they will build a Heavy Duty Shaft for this problem. They build shafts for all other Jeeps.

I guess this is a common problem especially when using BIG tires and lifts.

Apparently the lower intermediate shaft is on back order from Jeep in Detroit.

Does this tell us something?

Default me too

Yep, I have that and clicking noise to boot. After a easy trail (Rincon short cut to azusa) I developed the clunk and a clicking. The clicking noise gets faster when I accelerate. Anyone got info on that?

I don't hear a clunk but I feel it in the steering but not like when it needs balancing is mostly driving at 40 mph or less or driving through uneven roads but it only happens after 30 min it feels like something its loose but is very subtle My JK only has 805 miles on it.. Can it get worse ?? its driving me Crazy
I have not drove it off road yet...
How can I prove this to the dealer??? they are going to think I am crazy hmmm..and maybe I am
What do you guys think???
