Annoying noise/clunk in Steering Column
#221
guess were going to half to fix it ourselves
got this reply from Borgenson Universal Co. (they make steering components for those who don't know)
We have had other requests and we tried prototype shafts in a couple of JK's and it actually made the problem worse. It may be that there is another steering or suspension problem and our tighter shaft accentuated it. We have suspended development at least for the time being.
Thanks,

I had the upper column replaced and the service guy told me to put a 1/2" hose clamp around the collar. Look at the picture on top and you can see where the collar went. You can see the collar is gone so the shaft moves about a 1/4 of a inch in the fire wall opening causing the clunk feel in the steering wheel.
The lower picture shows the collar correctly in place and holding the steering column in place at the fire wall opening.
The service tech said this will become a recall issue because the collar is only snug tight and vibrations will cause it fall out and slide down the shaft. The hose clamp corrects this for just .95 cents.

I have begun to notice the cluck the last few months. Going to try to grease mine today. My bushing was still intact, though I did get slight movement from it when I tapped it with the rubber mallet, will also secure it as well.

I'm glad someone provided these pictures, or pic if only one shows up. My collar is all the way out of the firewall and the shaft has almost an inch of play in it. It appears it's been this way for awhile cause there is a thick layer of dirt/grime formed on the exterior of the collar. So is it assumed OK to just push it back in and clamp it down? Maybe put some grease inside first?
I never had an issue after doing this.
Good luck.

My bushing had come out about half an inch. Tapped it back in, and it helped a little.
I still feel the clunks a lot through the gas pedal. I got my Amsoil 5th Wheel Grease & Open Gear Compound in a spray can this week. I will try the remove/grease/reinstall method since I am not as comfortable poking a hole in the boot...will make sure to keep the steering wheel secure while I do it!
I know people say it comes back but it HAS to be better than an un-greased shaft...
