OK guys, so got words from my dealer - the shafts are bad as they are worn out. They want to charge $525 w/ labor to fix it as I'm at 38k miles
YEAH! I'm not happy right now. I told them to forget it as I'm going to check w/ my machanic. But they will put all the info and parts that I need so I can tell you exactly what it says once I go to pick up my JK. Wonering if you guys think it's safe for me to drive from DC to Palm Beach, FL in about 3 weeks from now??? Or should I just pay and get it fixed right now?

OK, got back from dealer. They said its caused by Steering Intermediate Shaft - $320 w/ installation and Steering Wheel Damper - $200 w/ installation.

Intermediate Shaft - lower one needs to be changed - which is only $137.70
The upper part is $144.42 but they won't even fix the whole thing for $320, just the lower part. I don't think that's worth it do you?

I still hope it won't be a huge problem going to FL w/ it leaving it the way it is. You guys think that's fine?

No idea, but it sounds like lots of us have driven with the clunk without serious repercussions. Someone has posted a DIY fix involvong nothing more than a small hose clamp, here in this thread. Start at the top and work your way through, you'll come across it.

My question is why the HELL isnt it covered under warranty? I had 2 GM vehicles in the past with the same clunk and they changed all kinds of things under warranty to remedy the situation.

Why would GM cover it and Chrysler doesnt?

It is, but he's outside of the factory warranty mileage limit, I believe.

I have been having this problem for a while now. My Jeep is only 2 months old and I just turned over 3,000 miles. I'm glad I came across this thread. I just looked and it seems that my bushing is about an inch or two visible from the firewall. When I get home, I'll have to push it back in and see if that solves the problem.
