Thanks. Pardon my ignorance

Nope... not kidding you. This will also (almost) solve the loss of drive our tranny has when it gets too vertical as it will miss the pickup.

As for checking it, you'll need to get the engine up to running temp and check the fluid with the engine running. Your going to need to get all the fluid where it goes (cooler, lines) to get an accurate reading.

No negative effects to this? And it's as simple as getting the fluid to the appropriate level then just adding 1.5 quarts?

And you are talking about the 5 speed auto, not the older 4 speed right?

You can overfill it as well... I find an extra 1.5-2 quarts is much better than what Chrysler wants us to put in there.
If you overfill the transmission, it can "boil over" and out the dipstick tube and catch your Jeep on fire.

I SERIOUSLY don't recommend extra fluid.

Even if the Jeep does not need the 4 low, it is recommended that you use 4 low instead of 4 high to keep the trans temp lower.

DEFINITELY install a transmission cooler! Search the forums about this. With the addition of a B&M trans cooler, my trans temps are not a much safer level.

Even this past weekend, with temps of low '70's, my Bullydog gauge was telling me the trans still got to 165 degrees in 4 high. Once I started using 4 low, the temps came back down 30 degrees.

Around here in Phoenix, my trans got close to 200 just driving around town, not good.

His 2012 already has a cooler in front of the radiator.

The problem is the fan isn't always on to pull air through it. 4lo will help a lot, though.

None that I have been able to tell and everything I dug up and everyone I spoke with seemed to think this was my best option, short of chasing my issues with cash (accumulator, new motor, you get the picture....).

Of course, my problem was different than yours, with the same result... I was losing drive as well, but when I was going vertical.

I guess the worse thing would be some would puke from the breather if too full. Haven't had any issue with mine.

I thought to check it the trans sat in N after being up to operating temp (contrary to what was posted earlier by someone else). That's how it's been on my other trucks and past TJ's......is it a new procedure for the JK?

Oops. Mine is a 2010. I know the newer ones have a tranny cooler. Even the factory tranny cooler for the 3.8/older ones were nothing more than a tube with barely any airflow directly on them. Pretty pathetic factory tranny cooler.

Did I miss something here?

Did the OP have a loss of drive or was it a high temp error?

I think those are two very different issues.

And while a good point about flammability, I'm not sure it's as bad as one would believe based upon that statement.
