Default 500 miles -- change to synthetic oil?

Hi everyone!

Well, I'm changing my oil -- diffs, t-case, trans, engine -- and have to decide if I stick with the manufacturer's recommended oil for another 2k miles, or switch to synthetic now (including a larger oil filter). What are your thoughts? Too soon? I didn't baby the engine, so it _should_ be broken in now, right? I'll probably go with Mobil 1 all around...

Thanks,
js.

I switched to Mobil 1 full syn at 4000 miles. i figure its broken in now, and eventually will convert the tranny and diffs/transfer case etc to full syn if I can.

I would think you would want at least 1000 miles. I dont think its actually "broken in" until over 2000. But most of the wear/mating should be done at a grand.

Thanks - I'll change to regular oil and save the synthetic for later.

Anyone know the type of oil that goes into:

- The manual transmission
- The transfer case
- Diffs
- Engine: I'm pretty sure this is 5W20.

Any truth to the rumor that the oil from the factory is 'special' for the break in period?

I figure at 500 miles it's time to get the original oil and metal shavings out of there. At 2000 miles I'll switch to synthetic...

Thanks!

You can change to synthetic at any time, but if you have metal shavings, then you have a problem.

Why? I've never heard of an engine that doesn't produce tiny shaving during break in.

If you have shavings big enough to see, then you have a problem.

This is highly subjective, but I think it was around 2000 miles before I noticed that my engine had noticeably better performance. I attribute that to being properly broken in by that point. Consider: Once you switch to synthetic, break in will stop. I wouldn't recommend switching before 2000, and have always waited until 5000 miles for all of my own vehicles (I've been running Mobil 1 in every one since the mid-70s). I will switch to synthetic in the JK at the next oil change: 6000 miles.
