Default 3.21 to 3.73

My '08 X has the 3.21 rear end and it's ok, but when you're on a hill or have a few people with you then you can tell that it could use something more like the 4.10 or 3.73. I was wondering what would be involved in swapping to the 3.73 that I've heard you can get in the '08's. Ya think the dealer would do the swap and would it be covered under the same warranty?

The dealer shouldn't have any problem doing the swap. There is an option for 3.73's anyway so warranty shouldn't be an issue either. Dealers are typically pretty expensive but it's worth it to keep your power-train warranty. Give your service rep a call an see if they're up for the task......

IF you are going to bother with it, I say go 4.10. You will have a hard time finding anyone who wish they went with a higher (numerically lower) ratio.

Thanks, I didn't get a chance to call about it today but maybe tomorrow. The only reason I would opt for the 3.73 over the 4.10 is because I like the mileage I'm getting with the 3.21....so I figured maybe a compromise between the two may be best for me. I'll try and get an idea of price tomorrow or Monday.

I know it's been a while, but I checked on this today when I had my first oil change. The dealer (5-star) said that they could do it but that it would be just like any other replacement part, which means it would be covered by a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty.....and NOT covered by the factory or extended warranty. I didn't even worry with getting a price...

Wouldn't dropping down a gear (like from 6th to 5th), accomplish the same thing - for free?

it's not the hwy I'm unhappy with...in fact, that's the only reason I like the 3.21 (mileage). It's when you're starting from a stop on a hill or off-road at low speeds and need the extra torque of the lower gearing.

Thanks for the clarification. When you had mentioned a "hill" before, I took it as meaning climbing a (highway) grade.

Default Totally Understand....

Everyday I drive from Denver into the Evergreen/Conifer/Idaho Springs Area Area on I-70. The climbing grade is steep enough to down shift. I finally traded in my two door for a 4 door. What I noticed is the 3.21 struggle big time going up, max I was going was 65 in the 4th. Now with the 3.73, I can easily go 65 uphill with more room. The catch is that i was getting 22.6 miles a gallon (yes, manually calculated by miles driven divided by gallons at the fill up) with 3.21. With the 3.73 I'm getting about 20 flat. So it all depends.. I went to a 4 door for room, not at all for the gears. But it's pretty nice. And I only use 85 octane up here....

If you're serious about the off-road part, go to the 4.10's...
