the transfer case knob just pulls straight off, i'd be suprised if the transmission knob is different. just a hard straght pull, no twisting. good luck

2001 manual states most knobs can be removed by hand.
motion should minic slide hammer constat force does not remove them
it acutally shows knob wraped wtih rag hooked to slide hammer.
i removed 4wd knob by hand couldnt get shifter knob to budg though.
you want to change the knob?
you dont have to remove to take console out.

My 2010 had a plastic piece around the bottom of the shift handle. Had to pry it down to get to a flat head screw that was undernieth that plastic band.

Read somewhere that there is a little notch at the bottom of the trim ring. Have to use a small flathead in that notch to release the trim ring. Then remove the screw holding the handle on. I checked mine and I have the notch, but have not tried to remove it.
