Is 2000 lbs really my max tow limit?

I actually just saw a 2 door on the hiway the other day trying to tow a large trailer. It was a scary sight to watch. The guy was in the slow lane, doing under the speed limit and he still looked borderline. It was the "tail wagging the dog" syndrome. The trailer was completely overpowering the tiny wheelbase of the wrangler, pulling it all over the road! I wont be towing anything more than a decent pop-up camper after seeing that!@
Your dog rocks!

Now that being said a 2dr tows 2000lbs and a 4dr tows 3500lbs. I thought the TJ's the difference was engine size. 4 cylinder 2000lbs and 6 cylinder 3500lbs. With the JK one engine size I think 3500lbs is possible.

It is all about the wheelbase between the 2 door and 4 door. I tow a 2700 lb popup camper with my 4 door with 4.88 gears and when loaded up with the wife, kids and gear my little 3.8 struggles to get up inclines. It works, but I drop to 40 mph in the PA mountains. I wouldn't want to try towing anything heavier for much of a distance.

Yeah, I was one annoyed camper when I went to U-Haul to rent a trailer, at which point I discovered my four-door had a 1000-lb max towing capacity and their lightest trailer was 970 pounds, giving me 30 pounds of payload. Moot point, since even if I had 3500 pounds towing capacity, they wouldn't rent to me because I have a soft-top.
