Default 1st Oil Change

Just called the dealership today and asked how many miles before I should have my 1st oil change... They said wait until the Change Oil Light comes on... Or about 5or 6K miles. That doesn't seem right. Opinions?

The oil change indicator seems to be different for many members on here. Some at 3,000 or less and some pass 5,000 or more for the light to come on. There are a lot of variables,,, Dust enviorment , towing , excessive idiling , high temperatures, 4x4 wheeling, etc. I change mine every 5,000 miles with Advanced Synthetic Mobil 1 ___5w-20 and a Napa Gold Oil Filter. Changing your engine oil is a cheap insurance to keep your engine running smooth. Shit can still happen, but at least it was not due to cheap oil.

I never wait for the light to come on , 6 months or 5,000 miles. When my warranty runs out, I will move it up to every 7,000 miles. The above oil is guarenteed to 15,000 miles every oil change, kinda extreme , 7,000 mark it is for me.

The manaul reads every 6K, I do every 4K . I guess it all depends on your driving

the oil will be good until (and a little beyond) the appearance of the "change Oil" light. But the risk is any debris from assembly, etc., that's why many people do a first change somewhere between 1 and 3 thousand miles.

Royal Purple and a Wix filter every 3,000 miles. Probably overkill but my dad was religious about oil changes and engines lasted forever. So, I blame my obsessive habits him.

I did my first oilchange with Mobil 1 at 1800 miles. From now on I'll change it at 6000.

What does the Jeep use to determine that causes the Change Oil Light to illuminate? Or in other words how does the Jeep know that the oil is spent? Does it know about synthetics like Mobil 1.

x2. The wife's 2010 seems to come one reliably at 2,500 miles.

It's most likely based on oil flow thru the filter. It can't be based on milage due to different driving habits. And it shouldn't be based on pressure. Because you could have pressure without flow.
