Memorial Day & Veterans Day
Memorial Day and Veterans Day are not interchangeable, but are often confused.
- Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was started at local churches in the 1864 or 1865 time-frame at the end of the Civil War. It was a day set aside to titivate the grave sites of war dead and place flowers and flags on their graves. It was officially observed in 1869. Originally it was observed on
30 May, but is now observed on the forth Monday in May.
- Veterans Day is set aside to honor all citizens who served in the U S military and are still alive. The holiday was started in 1947, but was not made an official holiday until 1952. Veterans Day is observed on:
- the 11th day,of
- the 11th month, at
- 11:00 AM (local time)
This is the day/month/time that hostilities ended for WWI, in 1918.
Bottom line: Memorial Day honors War Dead. Veterans Day honors living Vets.

In basic the D.I. said we would never forget our service number he was right! and that we will never forget our dead, he was right!
Poem
This is my Old Soldier Creed
Is duty for me, as vet, is to REMEMBER.
And loved the flag that we all cherished too.
I mourn with saddened face,
Upon the coffin, flowers that will be placed
So my thoughts will just stay with A soldier, a friend
Oh how we did our best , and to its end.
In step we marched, the cadence way
The same is true with you today
