JK half doors to new grey 14 pin
This thread will help you convert older doors with a 2 pin style connector, or half doors with manual locks/mirrors into a gray 14 pin connector, commonly used on 2014-2018 JKs with power windows/locks and have your dome and foot well lights work/door ajar sensor. You can technically also wire in some heated/power mirrors if you want as well, and if your really feeling it, add in the actuator for auto door locks. More on that later….
I wanted to share this with the internet in hopes of paying it forward. I researched for hours/days trying to find a solution to my problem, and never could get an absolute answer on anything related to half door conversions utilizing the older JK half doors on the newer 2015 JKs, so here it is in 1 spot. You can spend hundreds buying the full harness from Mopar, or go this route and be into it for around $50 total. In the end, I wanted factory style connections/reliability, and my door ajar switch to work again, mostly so it would trigger the dome light to come on, and the radio being turned off when the jeep is turned off. Without these connected, the jeep thinks your doorless and while the radio will eventually turn itself off, not having that dome light turn on when the door opens is actually pretty annoying. Nothing beats the fit, finish of factory Mopar half doors, and I wanted to have all the conveniences that go along with it.
First, I utilized Mopar part # 82212943, which is the older style 14 pinout conversion. You can buy this on Amazon and most other places on the net. For some reason, I find it really odd that they don’t make this same kit but with the newer grey JK plug seen below, which I have on my 2015 JK Sport. Would have made my life easier. You could also technically do without this kit, and just cut and splice wires to make this cheaper, but I wanted this to be reversible. Now I just have to plug or unplug and these doors should be ready to use on any year JK. Pretty sweet!
So, what did I do….I made a trip to the junkyard and you can to! After finding out that the grey 14 pin male/female plug is fairly common on many many Chrysler and Mopar vehicles, I knew what I had to do and made the trip. For reference, I took my plugs out of the back door of a Dodge Nitro from 2011, and also from a (2008 – I believe) Jeep liberty back door. These plugs are all over, minivans, jeeps dodge trucks etc…but I found mine on the back door panel, connecting the door to the body. Just popped the panel off of the B pillar, and you will find it in there. Disconnect it, (you will want the Male side for this) and cut it out leaving about 6” or so of the wires connected to your connector so you have some wire to work with. You will need 2 plugs. My yard didn’t even charge for these plugs, but they have an entrance fee of $4 so, I got these for $4. Please note, wire color does matter for this project.
As I said, my existing half doors were purchased on FB market place, and were factory Mopar half doors from I want to say a 2013. They aren’t power anything, but were bought originally with the jeep from the original owner. Definitely a great deal for my 2 door which came with a soft top, and full doors with power/heated mirrors and power windows.
2014-2018 were grey 14 pin connectors. IE, the older black 14 pin connectors wont fit. Some say you can remove the black housing and it will fit, but that’s just not my style and kinda janky personally. I went with Mopar half doors for the fit and finish, and wanted to keep it that way. So, I cut the main black 14 pin connector off of the kit that I bought, referenced above (part # 82212943) and simply found the pin outs for the grey connector, and spliced it in. On your 14 pin grey connector that you got from the junk yard, you will need to focus on pin #s 12 and 4 as these are the two that trigger the door ajar feature. Doesn’t matter what color they are, but you need to make sure your 14 pin connector from the Junk has wires coming from these locations. Being that most cars these days have power windows/locks it should, but double check before leaving the yard.
All you should have to do is splice in the purple wire with tan tracer coming from the 2 prong black clip, into whatever wire is coming out of pin #4 (first picture below) and the black wire into whatever wire is coming from pin #12 (2nd picture below) I utilized wire nuts first to ensure it would work, but as expected the clips are a factory fit, and now my door ajar works as I would expect from the factory, including my dome lights etc.. I went back and shortened the wires, utilized proper heat shrink splicing and then wrapped my new “harness” with electrical tape. Note, your new harness will have two “Male” ends, one with the new male 14 pin the other with the 2 prong end. Once I plugged it into the jeep body connector and the other into the door connector, things work swimmingly. Going forward, I left myself enough wire on the connector where if I wanted to, I could add heated and power mirrors or power door actuator if I wanted to, but don’t feel its needed right now.
Hope this helps out someone out there!!!
