Hi all!
Im going to start out by saying that I do not own a jeep. I joined this forum looking for help and advice as I make my friends jeep his dream vehicle while he is away in the army for the next six months. (Back Round) Jess and I have been friends for well over 15 years now practically brothers. We are pretty much the same person, same dreams, goals, likes and dislikes. But our biggest love is to build things, make things out of nothing into amazing creations. So he got this jeep for graduation in 2014 its a 1997 Wrangler 4 cylinder, with full doors, soft top, and some fat tires. But before we could do anything big to this jeep he got sent out. He and I shared this dream of making this jeep our one master piece but unfortunately he is getting sent else where after a one week leave and wont be able to take the jeep with him. So my plan is to make this jeep the best thing ever so when he comes home for that one week we will have the time of our lives on and off the road. I am on here to seek advice on different ways to make this jeep better than it is.
The one main problem we noticed is that its max on highway is about 60 and going up any incline you have to drop it back to third or forth gear going about 30-40 mph max. I was looking around and the most common thing i saw was to install a cold air take onto the jeep to improve air flow and replacing simple things like wires and spark plugs. I know jeeps are not built for speed but when we can not even draft behind an 18 wheeler its gets bad on the highway.
Another thing I run into is that while running the engine sounds ugly, it sounds like the engine is straining just while at idle. Any ideas what could be the cause or fix to this besides a different engine?
Finally the addition of a winch is much needed, we have gotten stuck plenty of times and had to be rescued by the tractor. Does anybody have any brands of winches that are good quality but not hard on the wallet. Also any tips for when installing the winch?
Im still getting used to this page so if this is not where this belongs somebody please speak up and ill haply delete this and relocate to another section of the page.

First a disclaimer, although he is your buddy, I wouldn't go crazy with his jeep just in case his taste are a tad different.
This forum is designed for jeeps ranging from 2007-2015 so you may not have hit the proper crowd for your buddy's TJ. I'm going to skip the questions about engine because I honestly just don't know. But as far as the winch goes, it depends on what your budget is. A lot of people run the smittybilt winches and are happy with them. If you can go a little higher in budget ($350-500) I love my Superwinch Tigershark. $500 will get you 9500 lbs, hawse fairlead and synthetic rope.
You may find some luck here with your other questions, but the Jeep forum may be able to help you out more (Jeepforum.com).

Yeah, there's a sub-category for the YJ's but there's not much action on them since it's mostly JK's here. Definitely try and hit up a YJ forum.
The 4-banger on the YJ, although they can last an eternity, there's not much GO unfortunately. You could try for a 4.0L swap but it seems like the consensus is to save yourself the headache, sell the 4-cyl and buy at least the 6-cyl. LOL
Sorry. I know. Not much help

Engine swap from 4 cyl to 6 cyl
