I've been lurking for a while now as I researched vehicles, and, now that I've pulled the trigger on my own, I thought I'd say hello.

I grew up in SoCal where the public land is plentiful and finding a place to offroad is just a matter of heading for the desert, so the north Texas "everything is private property" scene is kinda hard for me to deal with. I'm also new to Jeeps. My last truck was a LR disco 1. I know, I know, but it was fairly good to me when it worked. I wandered all around the Mojave in that thing before it steamed.

The jeep will be my 4-wheel exploration vehicle, alongside my dual sport motorcycle, boat, and everything else. Because it's mostly for traveling (with a bias towards unpaved roads and staying off the beaten path) I really wanted the 4-door model and it won't receive the really radical mods some of you guys run. I don't plan to lift or install oversized tires, at least not until the stock tires are worn out (probably not even then...I've already heard complaints/nagging about the step up into the cab with stock tires and no lift). I love that stuff but my mods are going to be more of the boring (security/reliability) variety. That's a bit of a departure compared to my last vehicle, which wound up with upgraded turbo, suspension, injectors, tune, on and on, but "horses for courses" and all that.

Soo...Let's see... about the jeep... I wound up with a serious posermobile of a 2010 unlimited. Leather interior, hard top, DVD changer, etc., in bright red. It's kinda embarrassing, and very different than the white stripped-down model I was looking for when I started shopping. That said, I'm really happy with the silly thing. It's more comfortable than I expected, quieter than I expected, has all the comfort features I could hope for plus the manual transmission that was my only real "gotta have it", and dropping into 4lo is a lot more fun than going locked and low on my disco, at least in my quick test. The only mod on order so far is a superchips 3875.

I don't have any pictures worth posting. Maybe in a week or so when I get back from my "break in"/Thanksgiving trip. I'm going to spend a couple of days in the Big Bend or maybe southeastern New Mexico area just getting familiar with my new toy.

I'm in East Dallas near White rock lake. I drive up 30 and 635 toward the Tollway Daily. Where are you at in Dallas?

 

Welcome and congratulations! I'm also in DFW. I moved out here from AZ so I know what you mean about everywhere being private land. There are some pretty good places to wheel around here though. Post up some pics when you can. A Jeep is a Jeep even if it's stock so be proud off your new toy. Oh and about not modding it.... Heard that before lol

Right now my jeep would be hard to pick out from any other stock vehicle except maybe by the flapping temporary plate on the back. I've been bookmarking all sorts of cool bolt on gear, from bumpers to safari rack/tent setups, but frankly I'd rather spend the money on gas and rack up some wheel time.

I've heard good things about various wheeling spots within 100ish miles of here. They sound much fancier than anywhere I went in CA. The difference is casual access. I think I racked up five short wheeling trips the first week I owned my disco, all for the price of gas. Nothing extreme but an hour here or there and a lot of learning. I've had my jeep for a week and nothin. Oh well, I'll make up for it this weekend.


I'm in the Addison area mostly, though I've been to White Rock Lake a few times with a kayak.

 

I work in Addison and live up the road. I'm sure our paths will cross. Any idea where your first adventure will be? I am thinking about checking out Bridgeport this weekend. There is a group heading out there Saturday from DFW so I have heard.

My first adventure will be Big Bend Nat'l Park. In fact I'll probably start towards there later this afternoon. The plan is Thanksgiving camping (campfire turkey...yum... ), Thanksgiving Jeeping, and as much fun as I can cram into three days.

I've never been there so it should be fun.

I'll keep my eyes open for the jeep in your avatar when I'm around town.

Barnwell Mountain in Gilmer

 

Welcome. Don't forget superlift ORV in hot springs. It is my fave in this area.
