Y get a waterproof winch?

i would worry more about the brand of shitybuilt then what model. if you need to market a winch as waterproof then there are some questions about there other models i would ask about to them. i have had 5 different winches over the last 20 years and none of them were ever considered waterproof. if you buy a decent name brand nine times out of 10 you get a good winch and no need to worry about the water.
It been totally submerged several times!

In my mind, it's more marketing than anything. There may be some improvement to circuits within the winch, but I liken to "marine" speakers and amps...still an electronic device, and still apt to failure from moisture.

Winches are more than able to be outdoors - that's what they're made for. If you're concerned, get a canvas cover and run with that. No need for a waterproof winch. If there's no price difference, fine. Otherwise, go with the one you like best.

The next winch I buy will be waterproof. I buried my Jeep in deep muddy water once and the winch failed on me while trying to get out. When I took it apart I found that the muddy water got into it and bound up the brushes on the motor. Being buried half way up your doors is not a good time for your winch to fail. I've got a Superwinch EPi 9.0s by the way.

I noticed one guy has had the same winch for 11 years and it is still going strong and another guy talks about having 5 different winches over 20 years. Did the winches fail? Or was there some other reason for changing winches?
