I have an xrc8 with the same problems and it is the 2nd xrc8 I have owned so far. When the exact same thing happened to the 1st xrc8 I called up smittybilt and they shipped me a box of repair parts, but thankfully when my wife bought the winch for me she purchased a lifetime warranty so 4 Wheel Parts replaced it free of charge and then I paid an additional $35 to add the lifetime warranty to the 2nd winch. Now my 2nd one won't free spool either. POS cheap winches.

I would try to unspool it all the way, and make sure you re-spool it under some stress or weight. I understand free-spooling can get affected if the line is not kept under stress when re-spooling. Worth a try atleast.

Because I saw your post on this, when I ordered mine I asked about the lifetime warranty and they told me they didn't offer a lifetime warranty. Did you get that through a particular location or on-line through the 1-800 main number. A lifetime warranty for $35 would be great.
