A winch cover. You can find them all over the place online.

Several companies make covers for them to keep the elements out.

I have heard that depending on the breaking and gearing of the winch, you can not switch from cable to synthetic line on some winches due to the heat caused by operation, make sure your winch is able to work with synthetic before spending all the on the line.

Hope this helps,

Happy Jeeping.

Google for 'replacing winch wire cable with synthetic'.
Wire scratches surfaces, while synthetic needs completely smooth surfaces, such as the fairlead.

Keep it covered - this goes for summer sun as well.
If it touched sand or mud, wash it real well so no sand particle stay in it, then let it dry, then reel it in.
Do NOT use a hot air blower on synthetic.

Also, with my steel cable, I don't have a cover, as I live in south Texas so snow/ice build-up is not a concern, I do regularly inspect the line, and keep it oiled up with 3 in 1 oil.

If you just bought it I wouldn't waste money switching out a brand new cable to synthetic wait til you need to replace the cable.

So, you unreel it, oil by hand, and re-wind!

I tend to go a bit overkill with such things, every few months I unwind, inspect and oil it. About once a month I oil it still on the spool. Had it a year never covered, the Jeep lives outside not in a garage, used it 5 or 6 times, cable still looks brand new.
