General rule is 1.5X weight. Stock jku is 4400 dry. Add 22.5 gal fuel couple ppl lift tires etc and adds up. I remember one guy here weight his at 7300 so that would put at min 10500. I say for most jku 9500+ should be good

The general rule is 1.5 x the vehicle weight. Chrysler puts a Warn 12,000 lb winch on their Power Wagon, and the truck weighs 7,000 lbs. A JK will weigh 5500 lbs if you don't add heavy bumpers and armor plating everywhere, so that would require a winch with an 8,250 lb capacity. But you also need to consider how you will be using your Jeep, and how much overkill you want to design into its build. My last JKU had a Warn M8000 winch, and it was adequate every time I needed it, which was for pulling the Jeep out of snow, or off of a high center. My current JKU has a Warn 9,500 winch, and I suspect it will also be adequate for anything I come up against. If I 4-wheeled in deep sticky mud I would want a higher capacity winch. I have a Polaris side by side, and I take it places I wouldn't even dream of taking the Jeep. The winch on the side by side is definitely overkill. The side by side weighs 1050 lbs, and the winch has a 4,500 lb capacity. It could dead lift four of those side by sides tied together, into a tree.

agree with most here. If you are on a budget, an 8k winch easily becomes a 16k with a snatch block. As for the sxs/atv winch? My can am came equipped with a 2500 winch that was taken out by trying to pull the can am out of a shallow muddy spot with an incline. Wen to 3500, and never had an issue.
