Default Winch power sizing: Is 12500 overkill for a JKU?

Was after a 9,500 and then saw that several 12500 winches are similarly priced. Is bigger always better, or in this case is 12500 overkill for a JKU? Thoughts/experiences appreciated!

I have a warn 9000 on my JKU and it works great. Look at working line speed, weight and read reviews. Imo I would not run anything over a 10k-10.5k

IMO I don't think it's overkill. The next winch I buy will have a higher capacity since most of the use on mine has been to rescue others vs. self-recovery. It's better to have it and not need it vs. need it and not have it.

Don't forget, the pull rating is based on the line being out most of the way. Many pulls I've done have been in tight areas where I can only get about 20 to 40 feet of line out.

12000lb Tigerz11 on my JKU. Lighter with Dynamica rope than most smaller winches with steel cable. Fills the pace in the ARB bar nicely also.

Agreed I'd rather have and not need. Initially I was looking at the 9.5 SUperwinch, but the 12.5 was 50 bucks more, same size and i believe about 3 lb heavier in same foot print. Figured it can't hurt and normal pulls might stress less

Not overkill, but probably not needed.

If I could find a 9500 with better line speed and more features I'd choose that over brute power. Remember that you can always double up on the line with a snatch block and then have 19000 pounds of force if you find you need that much power. As it is, we've got a couple 11000 lbs in our group and have had to tie that jeep off to other jeeps to keep it from getting pulled in when pulling someone out of a ditch.

It's not overkill at all! As was said here earlier, you get the full power only if most of the cable has been let out.
Linespeed? That does not matter at all I think, simply because you are stuck badly...be happy to pull yourself or a friend out of that mess at any speed!

Line speed is usually a lot slower on the higher-rated winches. With a 8000 pound winch you get good line speed for light pulls, or you can use a snatch block and slow the line speed by one-half while doubling the pulling power to 16000. Simple, durable, and versatile.

I worked on 1.5 times my fully laden weight as a minimum winch rating. Load your jeep up and head to a Weigh station
