You can see the cable if you bend down and look just under the bumper. I've spooled it out and back 5-6 times and it has wound up correctly each time. If it does wind to one side, you can still pull enough to get out of troube and then spool back out and watch as you wind in. Maybe it's not AS easy as a top mount, but it is worth a little extra effort to me.
