Why do you need to cut the frame with a psc rear bumper?
I love the look of the psc rear, but im not keen on chopping my frame in case i go back to stock for a sale or want a diff bumper. Why does a fella need to chop up a perfectly good frame just to fit a bumper?
Im assuming they mean removing a section since their website says a template is provided..

i dont have any experience wth psc, after reading about the bumper and looking at the pics, to me it seems to be that bumper was not originally designed for the jk. my guess is going to be that since the pics of the bumper, it looks like it is too narrow so if we used it on the jk, it would not sit all the way to the body because the frame ends stick out too far, by cutting off the frame ends it would be able to slide all the way flush against the body,
or might have to do wth the angles of the bumper not lining up correctly wth the frame. from what i gather on the rear bumper is they took a generic design from the previous jeeps and stuck it on the jk rather than design a whole new bumper.
to try to give a visual here, I AM NOT USING REAL NUMBERS
lets say the frame ends stick out 6 inches from the body of the jk
the psc bumper is 5 inches deep inside
if u installed it as is, the bumper would sit 1 inch from the body leaving a gap and the hardware probably not lining up corectly (bolts)
if u chop 1 inch off of the frame ends, the edge of bumper would now sit flush wth the body and mounting hardware would line up correctly wth the existing holes in the frame
i honestly have no idea but that is going to be my educated guess by looking at the pics because the bumper does seem to not be as deep as other bumpers designed for the jk
i would be 100% sure thats the bumper u want befoe doing a mod like that, depending on how much u have to chop off the frame ends, that might limit the bumpers in the future if u choose to change out. we can all make guesses here but unless someone has factual knowledge, i would call psc and ask

Contact them and ask. The template most likely is to drill additional holes. I had to drill an additional hole in one of the frame rails for my Shrockworks bumper. There were existing holes in one rail but the hole was not in the other so I had to measure off the one side for the placement of the hole on the other. A template might have made it easier.

"JK version of the BFH™ rear bumper requires some cutting of the ends of your Jeep's frame rails (a cut template is included in the instructions). "
he just needs to call them and ask

They did it so you could have a better departure angle. They did the same thing with their BFH front bumpers. It doesn't matter what kind of Jeep you have with these two bumpers there will be cutting of the frame. I think up front and out back it is around 2" you trim off the frame rails.
If you don't want to do the trimming they are also working on another rear bumper that will compliment their Brawler front bumper, and have a swingout tire carrier as an option.

Thanks Jay. Im not worried about departure angle as I dont crawl, I just really like the minimalist look of the BFH bumpers. I dont need a tire carrier either. Ill either just throw it in the back of my unlimited if im heading somewhere gnarly or leave it home. I slime all my tires anyway so the only hazard I have is a sidewall tearout or a nasty hole.

So if that is the case, who else markets a minimal rear bumper similar to this? Im dropping the rear spare and am looking only for shackle mounts. A hitch would be nice or if I could use a hidden hitch ect.

I like the OR fab better then the smittybilt as the smitty stuff is getting bad reviews for fit and finish lately. And i think the shape is more suited to the jeep body. Im looking forward to seeing what PSC's response i to the email but it looks like I might need to go with the or fab.
Thanks guys

"Jason,
It may behoove you to wait for our “for the masses” bumper to come out in the near future. This BFH bumper requires the frame to be cut so that the JK can actually have a wheelable departure angle unlike the scoop that hangs back there with the stock frame rail sticking out as far as they do. Our entire “BFH” line is designed with the more hardcore wheelers in mind and it’s not for everyone to cut into stuff like this requires, this bumper came first because of its simplicity and our shop JK would not fare well with a “for the masses” bumper on it with the wheelin that it goes through. Let me know what you decide either way, we like to hear input. Thanks"
yea makes sense, so in short it is becasue the frame ends stick out too far for the short depth of the PSC bumper which ultimately has to do wth departure angle.
