For those of you that have done the gear swap, was there a special tool or just a 6 foot pipe involved?!

My JK has been at the shop since last Thursday, they cannot seem to get it (sleeve) crushed. I mean they are being honest and straight forward, so its just a new learning curve as it's their first JK gear swap.

Jerry, you get that thing crushed!? lol

Nate
I'd find a new shop. Gears are no different in the JK.

what i can say is that these gears are not the same as any other gear, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about and if you think you do you should do a detailed post/thread with the buildup so you can show off your expertese sp?. i have done a few gears in my day these particular ones as well and the crush sleeve is by far the hardest on the planet to crush. so please gear man elaborate on how easy it will be to do on the next one so i wont go through hell again,, as always thank you so much for your help/opinion

If a shop can't do a D44 then something is wrong with the shop. Don't blame the crush sleeve. If they can't figure it out, you need a new shop. Some one already said how they did it. Not rocket science.

I will say the shop has a good reputation, yeah its been there a bit, but they keep in touch with me and are not passive n shit when I am there.

Not worried, it will get done.

seriously, i've seen them do it at the dealership

they may be able to reuse the old crush sleeve to. just depends.
It has been a while since I have done gears but "from what I used to know" the crush sleeve is a one shot deal, you can even over torque it and there is no "backing it off a hair"....you'd need a new one.

To those that have done swaps on the JK, did they change the 44 from preload shims to a crush sleeve?
Will the older 44 preload shims not work on this new 44?

Default http://www.differentials.com/install.html

"Crush Sleeve Design: If you are unsure about getting the correct pinion depth, it may be easier to install the pinion without a crush sleeve until the correct pinion depth has been established. always use a new crush sleeve for final assembly. Slide the crush sleeve on the pinion shaft (unless you are using the trial and error method) and install the pinion through the rear of the housing. The yoke usually must be tapped on while applying pressure on the pinion gear head to hold it in place. Use an impact wrench or huge breaker bar to apply the torque necessary to crush the sleeve. Proceed very slowly so that you don’t overload the bearings. The pinion preload will be zero until the bearings contact the races but will then increase very quickly. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check the preload. If the pinion bearing preload exceeds the specified allowable range, install another new crush sleeve and start over."
