To the OP -> I believe you're going to want to re-gear whether you ever go rock crawling or not, especially with an auto.

If you decide to re-gear, you might consider 4.56s. For your intended purposes, the Jeep will perform better, might return better around town mileage, and will be much more pleasant to drive.

If you decide to re-ratio, I encourage you to contact Ron Showers, owner of R&S Unlimited in Bennington, NE. He's a family owned operation with 30 years drivetrain experience (e.g. gear sets, t-cases, transmissions).

Ron did the gear set installations in my JK and plenty of welding on the Jeep too. Reasonably priced, stands behind his work, I've referred several happy Jeep owners to him.

The 3.8 lacks the grunt down low. Just get comfortable keeping your RPM's up in the 3k-5k range. You'll find that overdrive is a dream of what was...

You'll get by not re-gearing for what you're looking to do with it!

Also get a tranny cooler if you dont already have one or you will end up like me and burn up your tranny.these jeeps dont like 35s.
Which brand would you suggest for the chip?

Does the tow package have a extra tranny cooler? I am thinking of going with the 315/70 17 soon and might have to wait on gears.

yeah superchip is a brand. i believe some of the tow packages came with a cooler, but its located to far down and is small, an aftermarket one will be bigger and more effective.

What about the 6-spds? Do they still need a tranny cooler?

I currently have 3.73's and am also thinking about 35's . . . .

Any other advice?
