Default when to re-gear?

2001 jk unlimited. automatic with 3.73 gear.

I have made my mind up about the lift, I wanna go with the 2.5" teraflex kit that comes with new springs and all. I wouldnt mind going 4", but then I question when I need to re gear.

With the 2.5", I was looking to run 285/70/17 tires with aftermarket wheels or some tire close to being equivalent to a 33" tall. I seen a jeep today that had 315/70/17, lift unkown. That equals close to 35" tall.

If I were to run a 35, would I need to re gear? If so, what gear? Will i be safe running the 33's without re-gearing? I know its nothing yall like to hear, but I do NO off roading. About as off-roading as I will be getting is getting to a campsite, and getting out on the sand at the beach. I just want a good looking mall crawler lol. But i dont want it slipping in and out of gear on the highway and hills and stuff and struggling to run 65-70mph.

So, 2.5" with 33's? or 35's? gearing needed when? and what gear?

Anyone have pics of an unlimited with 2.5" lift or ANY lift with 33's?

The link in the post above has a good rpm chart. Just plug in some numbers and see what you come up with. Be sure to use actual tire heights. (33.5" or 34" is a whole lot more likely than a true 35").

A lot of guys with 6spds don't mind 35's on stock gears. Not many Auto guys will say the same. It can be done, you just won't enjoy it, and certainly won't be winning any races. (Not that you would win many with stock tires, but ya know...)

Check post #33 in this one has some great info:

I agree, manual and auto are two completely different gear charts

I have a JKU with an auto and 3.73's and I'm running 33's with 2 inches of lift. It's slow but livable. I can't imagine 35's with stock gears.

Put on your lift, put on your tires, drive it around for a while. Do you think it's OK? If so, don't re-gear. If there's not enough power for you then re-gear.

Joe 002 Hit the nail on the head. It is all in what you want. My vote would be Lift it, install some new rubber. Drive it_ make a informed decision.

I found a great local shop that wanted to buy the parts and do the install and warranty everything.

If you decide to re-gear you may want to check around for shops that have a good reputation and experience re-gearing JKs and will give you a good warranty. Check with them if they want to get all of the parts or if it's OK to get the parts and give it to them.

I drove my Jeep with 35s and stock gears for a couple thousand miles before I decided to upgrade. I then checked a number of shops in the area, talked with others that had work done at the shops, talked with owners, and finally picked the shop and dropped my Jeep off.
