It is easier to convert and use Backspace, as Offset uses the specific rim width in the calculation for how far out the rim moves. (a 12mm offset on a 6" wide rim is a 4.0" backspace. And a 12mm offset on a 10" wide rim is a 6.0" backspace.)

Stock rims are roughly 6.25" backspace. As that number goes down, the rim moves further out an equal amount. So stock rims + spacers is equivelent to rims with a 4.75" backspace. (6.25" - 1.50" = 4.75")

Offset is supposed to be the more accurate number to use, it just gets confusing when comparing rims with different widths.
