Default What size gears do I have?

I am new to Jeeps and just bought a 2012 unlimited Sahara 4dr. How do I know what gears came with the Jeep from the factory? It's lifted with 35's and I'd like to know what the previous owner may have added. I bought from a dealership and they couldn't tell me.

2 ways to tell. You can either take the differential cover off and count teeth. Or 2, jack it up and count the rotations of your driveshaft and tire. I have 5:13 so my driveshaft turns a little over 5 rotations to just one rotation on my tire. Mark both so you can count the rotations

Thanks kellyll so basically you can figure out the pinion and guess the ring by doing the rotation thing? How do I know what was installed from the factory? We're all unlimited Saharas built with the same configuration that year?

If you sign up here with the VIN, you will be able to view the original build sheet. Factory will be either 3.21 or 3.73.

Do the build sheet thing to find out what it came with from the factory.

Do this to find out for sure what it has now:

Jack one front tire off the ground.
Put a chalk mark on the tire and the drive shaft.
Rotate the tire by hand 2 complete revolutions while counting the drive shaft turns. The number will be your gear ratio.

A little less than 3 and 1/4 turns will be 3.21 gears.
About 3 and 3/4 turns will be 3.73 gears.

A little over 4 turns will be 4.10 gears.

So I found the build sheet. Factory installed 3.73 gears. Won't be able to do the resolution test for a while away at work for the next few weeks.

+1. Easiest way to do it. Takes you all of about 5 minutes.
