I have to agree. I run a 2 dr with 35'S, auto and had 4:10 gears stock . I regeareed to 4:88's and it works pretty good, I wish I had gone with 5:13. I cant imagine living with 3:73'S . I think you would be missing out on a whole bunch of your JK's potenial.

I have 33's and 3.21's.......should I go with 4.88's? Is that the most appropriate? I don't plan on going any bigger, I like the 33's, but I could use more get up and go..... Would 5.13's and 33's be better? I only want to do this once..

Quick question. I was looking at the prices for 4.88 gears for Dana 30 axles and saw this:

"The Dana 30 is a very common front axle in Jeeps of all kinds. It has also been used in other applications such as Broncos and Scouts. There is a carrier break at the 3.54 / 3.73 ratios. If you are switching from a ratio on one side of that break to a ratio on the other side you will need a new carrier to install the ring and pinion. "

This means, if I understand correctly, that 3.73 geared Jeeps won't have to worry about the new carrier correct? Only if the Jeep was geared 3.54 and under?

Might not be a bad idea to find someone selling their used 4.10 gears for cheap.

I have the 4.10, auto with 35" tires. Its not bad but not great either. On the highway there isnt much get up and go but enough to keep me from getting run over and to pass people. If i get into the mountains or a hilly area i have to turn of OD or ill drive myself nuts

How difficult is it to regear? Is it worth paying a shop to have done?

I drove a 6 speed with 4:10's and 35's and it was fine.. not quite as quick as running the stock 32's but it was not a dog.

Just a note, talking to the mechanic at the local shop about what I planned to do with my JK, he recommended 34 or under on the tire size because of the front D30. He said he has seen some go bad when the tire sizes get bigger.

After talking to someone else about it, they said it is because the D30 uses ball bearings instead of tapered roller bearings like the D44 and D60.

Of course if you hardly ever go off road it's probably not and issue. But then if you rarely ever go off road you really don't need the bigger tires either.

Theb,a theb a theb a that's all folks.

I am content with the 3.73 and rolling 315s with the auto tranny.....I will look into regearing when I've got the cash. Not sure how a manual transmission would play out in this scenario.
